TORCHWOOD - THE VERDICT SO FAR

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Justin & John
It's the finale of Torchwood tonight and I must say am really liking this format of one episode a day. The four episodes so far have been very well written with the right balance of drama, horror and comedy.

It's been far better than the previous two series, although they may not be a 4th series because :

From the Daily Record newspaper :

"Anyone sceptical about the ability of Doctor Who reviver Russell T. Davies to make spin-off Torchwood equally compelling had best just admit they were wrong and clear their diaries for five nights.

"This new Torchwood adventure... sees Captain Jack and his team in brilliant form and promoted to BBC1.

"The drama racks up the tension better than anything we've seen since 24, building into a sheer tour de force, a sensational TV event that will keep you on edge, night after night.

"Spine-tinglingly creepy one minute, sexy or amusingly sarcastic the next, this is a story that lead writer Russell says he has wanted to do for a long time..."

THE DOCTOR'S NEW COMPANION!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

New 'Doctor Who' companion announced

From www.digitalspy.co.uk

Friday, May 29 2009, 13:06 BST

By Neil Wilkes, Editor

New 'Doctor Who' companion announced

21-year-old Karen Gillan has been named as the new companion for series five of Doctor Who.

The Scottish actress will star alongside Matt Smith, who takes over from David Tennant as The Doctor in series five of the long-running cult show.

"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion," said Gillan. "The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Gillan previously appeared in Who as a soothsayer in the series four episode 'The Fires of Pompeii'. Her other credits include The Kevin Bishop Show, Rebus and Stacked.

Of Gillan's casting, new executive producer Steven Moffat said: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Rumoured contenders for the role of Matt Smith's assistant had included Lily Allen, Kelly Brook, Georgia Moffett and Skins star Hannah Murray.

Filming on the new series will begin in July for transmission around Easter 2010. Tennant's final episodes will air this Christmas.

DOCTOR WHO TO APPEAR BEFORE NOVEMBER!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Justin & John

This from www.bbc.co.uk

Tennant to appear in Who spin-off

David Tennant is to appear as the Time Lord in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, the BBC has announced.

Tennant, 38, will appear over two episodes of a new 12-part series of the CBBC show, which starts in September.

Russell T Davies, executive producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures and Doctor Who, said it would be a "full on appearance" and "not just a cameo".

The show follows the adventures of the investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith - a former Doctor's companion.

Smith is played by actress Elisabeth Sladen, 61, who also played the character in Doctor Who opposite Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker between 1973 and 1976.

'Special treat'

Sladen said she was "absolutely over the moon" to be co-starring alongside Tennant.

"It's fantastic news that Sarah Jane is going to spend some time working with the Doctor again and is testament to just how successful this CBBC series is."

Russell T Davies talks Tennant's return

Davies said: "Viewers thought they may have to wait until November for the next full episode of Doctor Who, but this is an extra special treat.

"And it's not just a cameo from David.

"This is a full-on appearance for the Doctor as he and Sarah Jane face their biggest threat ever."

The third series of The Sarah Jane Adventures will feature monsters who want to infect earth and a "living painting".

Tennant is being replaced as Doctor Who by actor Matt Smith, 26, who will appear as the 11th Doctor next year.

Tennant will firstly appear in three specials, starting with The Waters of Mars in November.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who may be heading for the big screen after a spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that "a script is in development".

BBC entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said there were no guarantees a film would be made and that, if the project went into full production, a release would be a long time away.

Apparently John Barrowman, who is currently on tour in the UK, has been telling audiences that it will be July and Russell T Davis also indicated July in a recent TV interview.

DOCTOR WHO'S NEW COMPANION CANDIDATES PART TWO

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Justin & John
Candidates 11 to 22

11.Alex Kingston

Alex was cast in the 2008 episode, Silence In The Library, as Professor River Song - speculated to be a future companion / girlfriend / wife of the Doctor.

The professor is another of Stephen Moffat's characters. The writer said at the time: "This character is destined to play a major role in the Doctor's future." As his next companion, perhaps?

12.Bernard Cribbins

Bernard first appeared in the 2007 Christmas special, Voyage Of The Damned, and was later revealed to be Donna Noble's grandfather, Wilf.

When the Doctor left Donna with her memory wiped, Wilf promised to look up at the sky every night and remember him on Donna's behalf. He's set to join the Doctor for a trip in the Tardis in 2009, but could this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship?

13.Catherine Tate

When we last left Donna, her memory had been wiped with a dire warning from the Doctor that if she were to remember her travels with him it would mean her death. It has been confirmed, however that Catherine has been lined up for a comeback in 2009.

A show source said: "Anything can happen in Doctor Who. His assistants are always recurring and Donna is no exception. When you're a Time Lord you can go back to any point in history and meet whoever you want." Maybe there's hope for Donna yet.

14.Catherine Zeta Jones

Russell T. Davies has revealed that if a Doctor Who movie were to be made, he'd want Welsh star Catherine Zeta-Jones to play The Doctor's assistant.

He said: "Being from Wales myself, I would love to have Catherine Zeta-Jones as a companion for The Doctor." Catherine hasn't commented.

15.Dervla Kirwan

Irish actress Dervla appeared as Miss Hartigan in last year's Christmas special, The Next Doctor. That adventure, set in Victorian England, saw the return of the Cybermen and featured a new mutant Cyberman called Cybershade.

She could be one to watch.

16.Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart has been confirmed as a guest star for one of 2009's specials. But the Star Trek actor won't be appearing as a companion.

A BBC source revealed: "Patrick's role is still being finalised but the plan is for him to play a renegade Time Lord called the Meddling Monk, who was last seen in Doctor Who in the 1960s. The Doctor thought his entire race was wiped out and gets a huge surprise to find another member of his species."

17.JK Rowling!!!

Russell T. Davies has revealed that JK "politely declined" the chance to write an episode, but also spoke about an episode idea in his book: "BAM! I thought, don't ask J.K. to write a Doctor Who, ask her to be in a Doctor Who! Imagine it. J.K.'s imagination becomes real! The Doctor arrives and has to battle through a world of witches and wizards."

It was not to be, however. Russell revealed that David Tennant vetoed the idea. Now that David's going could she be persuaded?

18.Elisabeth Sladen

Since being a series regular in the 1970s, Elisabeth has returned on several occasions, most recently her character Sarah Jane Smith helped to destroy the Daleks in the season four finale.

But sadly Elisabeth feels that she won't return to the show. The actress told Doctor Who Magazine: "I said to David: 'I've never thought this before, but I think this is the last time I'll be here'. It felt like it was my last time on Doctor Who. I'm happy with that, you have to stop somewhere."

19. John Simm

Last seen refusing to regenerate and dying in the Doctor's arms, John Simm is set to reprise his role as the Master this year.

But how will he return? Could the figure fingering the Master’s ring after his funeral provide the key? Either way, we doubt the Doctor will be welcoming his arch enemy back into the Tardis with open arms.

20.Rachel Stevens

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Rachel was pipped at the post for the part of Rose by Billie Piper when the Dr Who revival was originally cast. The singer has since said: "Things happen for a reason. If the right thing came around I'd love to do something."

Could Rachel be next to enter the Tardis?

21.Jessica Hynes

Jessica guest starred as the Doctor's girlfriend Joan Redfern in the 2007 episodes Human Nature and The Family of Blood. In an alternate future she became his wife, the mother of their two children, and grew old with him.

But sadly, the romance was not to be. The Doctor got his memory back, and Joan decided she was in love with the human Doctor, rather than the Time Lord. Might she change her mind?

22.Noel Clarke

The series four finale left open the possibility of Noel's character Mickey Smith going to work for Torchwood 3 during its third season, but there has been no indication that he'll appear.

Could he be returning to the Tardis instead?

DOCTOR WHO'S NEW COMPANION CANDIDATES

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Justin & John
According to http://tv.sky.com any of the following 22 could be in contention :

Candidates 1 to 10

1.Hannah Murray

Skins star Hannah Murray is the latest actress to be tipped as the Doctor's companion.

Hannah, who played Cassie in the first two series of the Channel 4 teen drama, is reported to be in secret talks with show bosses about the role.

A BBC insider told the News Of The World: "Hannah did some challenging stuff in Skins and they see her as an up-and-comer."

2.Lindsay Duncan

Acclaimed actress Lindsay will join David Tennant for the second of 2009's Doctor Who specials.

But could her character Adelaide - apparently the Doctor's cleverest and most strong minded companion yet - become a permenant fixture in the Tardis?

3.Kimberley Nixon

Cranford star Kimberley has admitted being "keen" on the prized role, causing bookies to slash the odds in her favour.

The actress told the Daily Star: "Well, the studios are right next to my home in Pontypridd, so it'd be very handy. It would be lovely to be filming and be able to sleep in my own bed.

"Being in an action role would also be great. I've never done anything like that before."

4.Billie Piper

Popular companion Rose Tyler made a surprise return to the Tardis last year, and ended up in an alternate dimension with a Doctor of her very own.

The actress, who is currently expecting her first child, is reportedly undecided about whether to return to her role as Rose in the next series of the hit show but has said that motherhood will take priority over her career.

5.Michelle Ryan

Michelle apparently auditioned to replace Billie Piper as the Doctor's companion in 2007, however, Freema Agyeman was ultimately chosen for the role.

She was given a second chance to star alongside David Tennant in the Easter special Planet Of The Dead.

6.Lily Allen

Will Lily follow in her father's acting footsteps? According to reports, the singer could be in the running.

Executive producer of the show, Piers Wenger recently told the Daily Telegraph: "We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."

7.John Barrowman

John's a firm fixture in the Whoniverse, currently leading the gang at Torchwood. But it's well known that Captain Jack Harkness has a soft spot for the Doctor.

Could his adventures lead him back to the Tardis?

8.Carey Mulligan

Carey made her Doctor Who debut in the award winning series three episode, Blink, as photographer Sally Sparrow.

A fan favourite, there have been calls for show bosses to make Sally a firm fixture in the Tardis. No comment has been made by the Beeb, but as Sally was created by series five showrunner Steven Moffat, maybe she'll be back.

9.Freema Agyeman

Series three companion Freema reprised the role of Martha Jones for five episodes of series four, but no mention has been made of a return for the character.

Speculation had been rife that Martha would join the Torchwood team, but she is starring in ITV's remake of hit US crime show Law & Order. Does this mean no more Martha?

10.Georgia Moffett

Georgia originally auditioned for the part of Rose Tyler, but ultimately appeared last year as the Doctor's daughter Jenny. It was new show boss Steven Moffat who suggested that Jenny be brought back to life at the end of the episode, does this mean that Georgia will reprise her role in a more permanent capacity?

Well, she'll definitely be returning for one of 2009's specials, but we'll have to wait for more details.
