We arrived in Whitby on Saturday 21st June at about 9am.
Whitby is a fishing town situated on the North-East coast of England on the River Esk which flows from the Yorkshire Moors into the North Sea.
Whitby is famous for its fishing industry (sadly in decline) and probably boasts more fish and chip shops/restaurants than any other UK town. It is also associated with Bram Stoker's Dracula. In the book Dracula arrives in the UK at Whitby.
Also famous for Whitby jet.The black jet is found in the cliffs around Whitby, and has been used since the Bronze Age to make beads and other jewellery. The Romans mined jet extensively, and Whitby jet was at the peak of its popularity in the mid-19th century, especially after it was favoured as mourning jewellery by Queen Victoria.
Captain James Cook, the English explorer, also lived in Whitby and there is a museum dedicated to him and a statue of him on the West Cliff.

The Grand Turk (you can tour this ship, we didn't have time for that this year, though)
We had a look around a few of the shops in the newer part of Whitby. The town is divided in two by the River Esk, the newer part of the town is on one side of the river and the old town on the other. There is a swing bridge connecting the two.
At about 2.30pm we collected the keys to our apartment and drove to it so that we could unpack the car and have a deserved rest!

The view from our holiday apartment overlooking the River Esk.
This is me looking at the books provided by the owner of the apartment.
