Clifford T. Ward (1944-2001) was a popular English singer/songwriter, best known for his career as a solo artist.
He only had two hit singles in the UK, "Gaye" which reached number 8 and "Scullery" which reached number 37. It was said that he would have had more commercial success were it not for his dislike of touring, public appearances, interviews and photo shoots. "The Best Is Yet To Come", from the album Both of Us, enjoyed success when covered by Justin Hayward, and his songs were also recorded by Cliff Richard, Jack Jones, Art Garfunkel, and Judy Collins. He was compared to Paul McCartney by reviewers and his songs have strong melodies and concise, original lyrics. (Wikipedia)
His writing could be classed as quintessentially English with poetic lyrics and beautiful melodies.
This album is a collection of some of his best material, the stand out tracks for me being "Scullery", "Home Thoughts From Abroad" , "Wherewithal" , "Not Waving-Drowning" and "Nightingale"
Having said that there isn't a bad track on the entire album. I've already played it through twice since I downloaded it!
Clifford T. Ward was in my opinion a lyrical genius, the songs on this CD range from happy to sad and from the sublime to the ridiculous!
If you've never heard of him and would like to try out his music this album would make an excellent starting point.
It was a great shame that he died so young from a combination of multiple sclerosis and pneumonia.
